I just realized that the reason I don't post movie reviews here is, at least in part, that I have a strange tendency to adore movies that everyone seems to think are embarrassingly bad. The Doors, for example. I generally like plenty of Approved Intelligent Movies as well........ but somehow I find my taste in movies more embarrassing than my taste in books. If I like crappy books, I will either a) admit they are crappy, but vaunt them anyway, or b) mock everyone for thinking they are crappy. I'm not confident about movies.

(This post brought to you by the self-involved rambling department.)

If I see publicity, especially word-of-mouth, lauding a certain movie that's Approved And Intelligent, chances are I won't see it. If it promises to be heartwarming or life-changing in any way, shape, or form, that's double the amount of time I'll go without watching it.

I prefer movies that are intelligent and important by stealth - like the South Park movie - or make no pretensions about being absolutely idiotic and devoid of quality, like Urban Legends 2.

Yes, but see, you have STANDARDS. My only standard appears to be whether I fall asleep or not. Movies that have made me fall asleep: Baraka, The Passion of Christ, and some comedy that my husband really likes that put me to sleep 3 times. I am kind of a movie whore.

That's true, I guess; an anti-standard is still a standard.

There was an Onion editorial from the perspective of a woman who liked nearly every movie she saw, and she was begging for some kind of taste arbiter. It was hell, just enjoying the movies she saw. If only she had a friend with her to tell her what stuff she was supposed to like...

Some people go to movies to be analytical, some to escape, some to see stuff blow up. If you like everything, nothing wrong with that. It's probably easy for you to get immersed visually.
