spell portrait dead

This one falls into the guilty pleasure category, because the author is smart and readable, and the ideas are interesting, but the book itself doesn't ring true enough of the time. Everything is too idealized and I couldn't bring myself to believe the conversations really took place the way they did. A disappointment, but a disappointment I tore through anyway.

The Portrait, by Iain Pears
A delicate little story that starts by making you wonder why it's bothering to be told and finishes with by-then inevitable high drama. A gem, really - but more of a garnet than a diamond. 'Scool, I like garnets.

Staying Dead, by Laura Anne Gilman
I checked out this book and its sequel from the library at the same time (something I almost never do), and I'm glad. It was engaging and funny and restful. The heroine reminds me a great deal of Gwen, the electricity-using thief character from Angel, but this is a good thing, since I never got as much of Gwen as I'd've liked. Yay new author yay.
