The Amulet of Samarkand: The Bartimaeus Trilogy Volume One, by Jonathan Stroud
Dark and funny and engagingly complicated while still being a proper kid's book. Possibly my favorite book so far this year. Highly recommended.

The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, by Julie Edwards
This was one of my most favorite books as a child, and I have fond memories of reading my school library's copy over and over. Unfortunately, it has not quite stood the test of time, and while I treasured rereading it for the memories that came with, I only found it acceptable in and of itself. I can see why I loved it so, but I want different things from it now than what I found back then.

Good Woman: Poems and a Memoir, 1969-1980, by Lucille Clifton
I love Lucille Clifton so much, and I was delighted to find this at my bookstore so that now I have some of her work for my very own. A very small sample of her writing:

the making of poems

the reason why i do it
though i fail and fail
in the giving of true names
is i am adam and his mother
and these failures are my job.
