From a Buick Eight, by Steven King
Mar. 10th, 2005 08:44 pmI listened to this on unabridged audiobook as background for sewing, and I suspect that's about the only context in which it would be worthwhile. It's not bad, exactly - Steven King is never less than competent, and it has some great bits, but it is nowhere near Bag of Bones or Hearts in Atlantis - I wouldn't even call it as good as Dreamcatcher. It's just that nothing really happens - the whole story is flashbacks, there's rather a lot of annoying phrase repetition (which I am willing to grant deliberation, but may have just been lack of editing) and you can see the ending coming a mile away, plus there's a really cheap twist. Which sounds crankier about it than I really am, because it was fine, as backgrounds for sewing go, and the characters rang very true to me. Also, some of the readers made me happy. And, to be fair, I might've enjoyed it more if I hadn't taken several months to finish it.
