The Broken Land is far-future biotech set far enough ahead that it feels like an allegorical fantasy about religious divisions and war in our own time (where our own time = the last 400 years or so). I still prefer McDonald's Evolution's Shore to any of his other books (all of which are worth reading), but this one gave ES a run for its money.

Jana Riess's Buffy book has "A Spiritual Guide" in the subtitle - and I can see why - but I didn't really find all that much spiritual guidance within. Of course, that's not what I was looking for. I was looking for a smart, amusing tour through the Buffy plots and characters from a religion-informed perspective. On that count, it delivered wonderfully. Mmm, intelligent fluff.

Jane Juska is a 67-year-old woman (or was when she wrote this book) who talks frankly about sex, her psyche, literature, music, her childhood, her experiences as a teacher and a mother, and a lot of other things - in an elegant and endearing fashion. One of my favorite books this year. The sex is sometimes graphic, but I wouldn't consider it the point (despite the author's occasional claims to the contrary). Highly recommended.
