I really think Ms. King's Mary Russell series is my favorite roughly-contemporary mystery series ever. I especially enjoyed the second half of this book, and am glad to find out that I'm not the only feminist with a weak spot for Kipling.

A Place So Foreign ... is a short story collection. Usually I tend to avoid short story collections, but I read and really enjoyed Doctorow's two novels - for free - and since he won't let me give him money directly, I went ahead and ordered this. To my surprise, they are actually mostly the sort of short story that I like - that is, they are truly suited to the short story form and don't read like novel proposals or overly dense poems.
I enjoyed the best of these stories more than I enjoyed his novels, although a couple of the weaker ones were somewhat forgettable. Check out www.craphound.com to see several excerpts and essays by this author.
