Bad Dream was a decent book. It wasn't as good as I'd hoped based on his young adult novels. The narrative distance that worked so well for me in those is sort of offputting in something so near-future - kind of squicked me. And then, it's so bleak. 1984ish in its best moments, creepy-politiciany in its worst. Glad I read it, though.

Karen Armstrong is one of my favorite authors in the entire world. The part of me that would like to grow up to be David Quammen would be fairly happy to grow up to be Karen Armstrong instead. That said, I wouldn't really recommend starting with The Spiral Staircase, good as it is; I think the intensely personal nature of the book would be better appreciated by someone who was already familiar with her staggeringly good more objective works. I would start with A History of God or Jerusalem or the currently highly topical The Battle for God, which covers various aspects of religious fundamentalism.
