My best guess is that they were perhaps asked to bring their "favorite book" and that tends to be something younger than grade level for most kids that aren't yet old enough to swear off their childhood favorites....
It may also have to do with what you do and don't recognize on sight - the girl out front in the red shirt is reading Twilight. The 3rd kid in in the first establishing shot is, I think, reading some Cynthia Rylant war novel that's aimed about 13-14. The girl in the black t-shirt and the girl reading the green DJ-less hardcover both look to be reading at-grade-level things if I had to guess. The Giver (girl with a white shirt open to show a red shirt underneath) is readable by as low as 3rd or 4th grade but I think the themes in it make it very appropriate to 6th/7th... (DEATH).
Also I suspect, rewatching and looking for that issue specifically - most of the thicker-looking books have either no dustjacket or less clear obvious indication of what they are about on the dustjacket. I think younger kids' books would tend to have bigger fonts, simpler pictures, etc...
