Dead Witch Walking, by Kim Harrison
So this is completely over-the-top, the heroine is fun, it's frequently hilarious, and satisfyingly action-packed, and I almost LOVED it, as paranormal bad-ass novels go .... BUT:

Gewurtzenheimer on toast, a mink is NOT a rodent!! A mink is more like a *bear* than like a rodent; it EATS rodents and NOT carrots, and I'd be a lot more worried about its canines than its incisors, and ZOG ZOG ZOG. The mink in this book worked more like some kind of super-rat. GRAW.

But, you know, the book was good enough that I actually put up with this driving me crazy for quite some time, and eventually it was no longer part of the story, and I enjoyed the rest of the book. And the last time someone wrote something this biologically stupid in a novel I threw it across the room, and I wasn't even tempted to throw this one ... so there *is* merit here. JUST NOT IN THE MINK DESCRIPTIONS. *STOMP STOMP STOMP*

It's not like basic research is all that hard anymore.

Man, that pisses me off, when authors don't bother to do the most basic of research or fact-checking. I mean, if they are going to write detail about something they know nothing about, at least do a cursory wikipedia check on it first.

hrmpth. Totally ruins my ability to take anything else in the story seriously.

Luckily this is the kind of story that isn't meant to be taken seriously in the first place. I think that's the ONLY reason I managed to get through the mink part.

I dunno, minks might as well be rodents, in my book. :)

I know a number of folks with an irrational hatred of the mink/ferret family. Really cute creatures actually--just not the best of house pets.

Oh, I don't hate minks and ferrets, they just sort of do look like rodents in some ways. :)

Mustelids get no respect.

You'll tell me if I hit some glaring inconsistency, then. Good to know.
