So, a recent post by [livejournal.com profile] randomdreams reminded me of my delight in breaking things (how many people DON'T delight in breaking things, at least once in a while?), and then a Tolkien game I was playing reminded me that the delight goes back a long way - and I'm not talking the thoughtless variant that you can see in a baby, but rather the self-aware, slightly self-conscious, savoring sort. I suppose it does for most people, but I don't think about the delight of destruction that often, save for the pyrotechnic sort.

Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates -
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!

Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Splash the wine on every door!

Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you've finished, if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!

Mmm, threatened pandemonium.

I dig on the thought of savoring destruction.
Like the look of transcendent bliss on someone's face just before the person jumps out and scares someone else: that sense of antici.............................pation.
