The Smile of a Ghost, by Phil Rickman
It seems that every *other* book in this series is acceptable but has annoying bits. This being one of the odd-numbered ones, it was smashing in every way and very hard to put down - no annoying bits at all. I love the way he works in the history without infodumping, and I love the way his characters' dialogue not only rings true to each character in general, but actually changes to reflect how the character is feeling - a simple example being someone who has trained themself up to not have much accent, but the accent slips back in when they are unpleasantly surprised. Subtle but very effective.

Try the "Nightside" novels by Simon R. Green. They are a bit dark, but VERY entertaining. We seem to have the smae taste in books, so I thought you might enjoy these ones.
