Hm. I wasn't really paying attention when I picked this out at the library and I thought I was getting philosophy. Instead, psychology. Hence a little less complex than I was expecting. Also, the author is very clearly politically biased. However, it was an interesting and erudite little book.

Califia's Daughters, by Leigh Richards (aka Laurie R. King)
Oh, fun book, fun book. Not as unremittingly intellectual as say, Charnas' Motherlines series, but not utter fluff either. I devoured this one today - reminds me of Ammonite in its characters and Ursula LeGuin in its obvious and convincing love for Californian nature.
