Light Music was difficult. It took me about 200 pages to actually feel like I knew what was going on most of the time. That said, it was really a beautiful book, smart and lived up to its title.

I think reading Sharon Shinn is my homage to or continuation of teenage romance novel habits. Angelica used a lot of romance novel tropes, but it's not stupid and not cardboard and not embarrassing, so I don't completely think of it that way. Also the non-romantic themes bear equal or greater weight than the romantic ones. I continue to be intrigued by her quasi-biblical, quasi-science-fictional stories.

A Handmade Wilderness recounts the adventures of a white English professor and a black floor sander, life partners, who moved to the backwoods of Mississippi in the 60s. I wouldn't call it elegantly written, but the man knows how to tell a good story, and the content is interesting. A satisfying book.
