The Mercury 13, by Martha Ackmann
Mar. 13th, 2004 04:36 pmThis is a fascinating book about the feminine counterparts to the first astronauts. Unfortunately, these women did not actually get into space, despite being as mentally and physically fit as the male astronauts were, due to (in brief) ingrained sexist attitudes in the military and NASA. Anyway, the book is very interesting, not as polemical as I expected, and includes many footnotes. I have a special place in my heart for well-done footnotes.
