Religious Days of The Good Paddington
Aug. 17th, 2008 05:47 pmThe Last Days of Old Beijing, by Michael Meyer
This was a thoroughly-researched, satisfyingly-textured account of the hutong neighborhoods in Beijing, their (almost total) destruction, and why it matters - by someone who actually lived in part of a dilapidated courtyard home on a hutong for two years himself. I really liked the particularity and intimacy of this book.

The Religious Case Against Belief, by James P. Carse
Compelling and irksome, both - which I'm pretty sure is what the author intended. Thumbs up.

Paddington Here and Now, by Michael Bond
I'm not sure if these weren't quite as good as the original Paddington stories or if I'm just not as appreciative of them (though the illustrations were every bit as awesome). Clearly a rereading of the originals is required... (which might just be the main reason I picked this up in the first place).

Fables 10: The Good Prince, by Bill Willingham et al
*dreamy sigh* - Now, that was just what I needed today. Chivalry, derring-do, a dash of cuteness, and hanging over it all, the certainty of impending chaos - what more does a girl need from a graphic novel series? Of all the myriad fairy-tale retellings I swoon over, Fables is still my most favorite.
