i don't usually do this, but
Dec. 17th, 2007 09:46 pmA filmic recommendation:
The Sharpe series, based on the books by Bernard Cornwell, is awfully awfully damn shiny. The continuing story of a British man with an impoverished childhood and long years spent serving in India, raised from the ranks to become a heroic figure during the Napoleonic war - full of Chivalry and Romance and irony and people speaking French with varying degrees of competency. (I was amused to notice, as an aside, that the French is much more pungent than the subtitled translations would lead one to believe.) I've been hooked on it all semester, and I think the acting is grand. Plus they're vouched for by a military historian at my school who regularly has waitlists over 80 for his classes (in a school with less than 2000 students, 80 is a lot). I mean, I don't think you should rush out on my word alone and buy them, unless you're really into either Wellington's army or Sean Bean - and all indications are that Sharpe's Gold is a stinker that should never be watched - but I've loved every single one of the ten I've watched so far. Go see if your library has Sharpe's Rifles, the first one, at least. Give it a shot.
