Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson
Poignant and thoughtful. Theologically complex without losing track of the story.

Singer of Souls, by Adam Stemple
Mythic fantasy that was a lot darker than I expected. I liked reading it, but oy.

Sunwing, by Kenneth Oppel
Young bat has fantastical adventures. Just as much fun as I'd hoped from reading the first one, Silverwing.

I loved Brendan Fraser's reading of this book so much that I'd be hard pressed to evaluate the story on its own merits. He reads like that favorite adult read to you when you were a kid ... totally unafraid to be goofy, with the funny voices and the vrooming noises and so forth - but totally captivating. I think if I'd just read the book to myself, it would've reminded me of Michael Ende stylistically and I would've enjoyed it anyway - but he does SUCH a great job reading it.
