This Egyptian fantasy spends most of its time passing for a Victorian mystery novel, very reminiscent of Elizabeth Peters' early Amelia Peabody books, only without the parodic edge, and with a bit more moral complexity. The good characters are plausibly flawed, the bad characters are plausibly admirable, and the entire thing was quite pleasing. Still, I think her book Changer was more impressive - that one was brilliant, and this one is just good.
