Braving Home, by Jake Halpern
Feb. 19th, 2004 11:20 amA fun book. Essays about people living in strange inhospitable places (eg surrounded by molten lava, on a recently-flooded floodplain, and so forth). Well written, good insight into character, and made me like both the subjects and the narrator. Minor quibble: the Cajuns came down from Acadia, where the Acadians live. NOT Arcadia where the Arcadians live.

Fat White Vampire Blues, by Andrew Fox
Feb. 19th, 2004 07:57 pmBasic Premise: Overweight schlub of a New Orleans vampire (but sympathetic protagonist) has his life fall apart when he is targeted by the new guy in town. Many wacky and sad hijinks ensue.
I liked this not as well as I'd hoped to, but better than I'd feared after the first 50 pages. Was decent reading.
