The Island of Dr. Moreau, by H. G. Wells
Castaway discovers he's washed up on an island where some very strange experiments have been going on. I don't remember reading this one before, but part of me thinks I must have - because it was all so familiar. Maybe it's just a cultural capital thing. Anyway, I really enjoyed reading it; I love the way Wells writes.

Joy Comes in the Morning, by Jonathan Rosen
It took me the first third of the book or so to truly warm up to this quiet and thoughtful novel about a Reform rabbi, a science writer, and the man who leads them into connection. That said, by the end I was so involved that I'd shed a tear or two along the way.

Promethea 4, by Alan Moore et al
Hurrah, hurrah, glimmerings of a plot. AND it's still damn pretty.
