The Romance of the Romanian Cross

This was a beside-the-bed book for a couple of weeks. Criteria for beside-the-bed books: a) must be immediately entertaining when picked up, b) must be easy to put down quickly when spouse comes to bed. It fulfilled its duties very well. Plus it had enhanced Canadian content because the author lives in Halifax or somewhere like that, so it was full of adorable Canadian love stories.

The Romanian, by Bruce Benderson
This book is extremely well-written, sharply observed, and full of fascinating Romanian history/culture stuff. Otherwise it would have been too too far away from my own values to keep reading (if it were fiction, ok. but as autobiography, I kept having the 'you did WHAT? you felt sorry for yourself because WHY? shouldn't you be too smart to react like a 17-year-old all the time?' reaction). As it was, I couldn't put it down, and will probably work my way around to reading other stuff by this author.

Morrigan's Cross, by Nora Roberts
I didn't really get immersed into this until about 1/3 of the way through, and even then the first Big Dramatic Sex Scene took me back out of the story for a bit - it's been a while since I read any romance-based books. And no matter how hard they sell this as fantasy, it really is ALL about the romantic/interpersonal angles. That said, by the end of the book I really wished I'd already picked up the next one. Nora Roberts is very good at what she does, and I'll be finishing this series out. Not sure I will seek out more of her writing after that, but I'm definitely attached to this set of characters.

(I can't believe I didn't finish a SINGLE book while in Las Vegas and on airplanes. I mean, I read about 1/2 of Morrigan's Cross there (finished it this morning), and I chugged through a few hundred pages of Michener's Alaska without actually getting to the end yet, but still! Jeez! I don't remember the last time a vacation was so jam-packed and/or sociable that I didn't plow through several books while waiting for the next thing to happen. It's kind of neat, actually. Feels good to have given the brain a bit of a rest.)
