Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
I did like this collection of short biographical essays, and the design was great, but I was frustrated because I felt like I spent the entire time *thisclose* to loving the book, but never quite got there. And somehow that was worse than if it hadn't almost measured up.

The Memory Artists, by Jeffrey Moore
Very shiny and warm-hearted postmodern science-fiction-ish novel set in Montreal with lots of wonderfully geeky bits. Also, cynical Canadian wit.

Full Dark House, by Christopher Fowler
Very shiny and warm-hearted British mystery novel set in London with lots of wonderfully geeky bits. Also, caustic British wit.

Oh, I'm glad you liked Full Dark House. I think you'll like The Water Room even better.

I totally understand what you mean about Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life ... I loved the concept but felt like it never really coalesced into something great. I felt very much on the outside and not involved in it. I guess that's the downside to the encyclopedia format.
