Kingdom by the Sea, by Paul Theroux (unabridged audio)
Charmingly bitchy. The narrator for this was great, and the author's generally negative tone is seasoned by his evident affection for the British coastal towns he writes about. The eighties are long enough gone that the current-events stuff is historical rather than dated - and the sections on Ulster were horrifying. But overall, it's a light book whose cheerful misanthropy rather overrides the serious worries underneath. It somehow reminds me of James Herriot - though I don't think they're actually all that alike.
